Rock pooling is another popular activity the whole family can enjoy, any time of year, come rain or shine. Whitby has a good mix of both sand and rocky beaches, the latter being covered in sea life rich rock pools.  If you decide to go rock pooling be sure to go when the tide has gone out, so that the pools are revealed and full of fresh sea life. You might also want to take a bucket and net with you, so that you can examine your nature finds up close, although always remember to put the sea life safely back. You can expect to find starfish, crabs, shrimps and fish, as well as colourful seaweeds and shells.

Being a seaside town, fishing makes an obvious choice. We recommend you book well in advance as fishing trips are hugely popular. Click here for more details.

Horse riding is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy. Croft Farm Trekking Centre is a small family riding school in Fylingthorpe who can help you, no matter your ability or experience.

If you want to give surfing or paddle boarding a try there’s a surf school in Whitby and Sandsend. This activity is great for the whole family to enjoy and they can provide all the equipment you need , so there’s no need to buy a wetsuit or surf board.

On that note, if you are an avid surfer or cyclist and want to bring your own surf and/or cycling gear, we have a few properties that have a useful outbuilding – perfect for storing your equipment safely and securely for the duration of your stay. We have Rosedale, Old Stable and Coachman’s Rest, all located in picturesque Port Mulgrave.  We also have Chapel Cottage in Lythe (near Sandsend), a location that’s handy for those that love the seaside as well as the countryside.
