Is Whitby suitable for people with a disability?

Our Properties

You should be aware that Whitby has many steep hills and cobbled streets and some of our properties have steep staircases and, in some cases, low beams. For people who find walking or steps difficult, we recommend that you call us to discuss your specific requirements before making a booking. We know our properties well and have stayed in many of them ourselves, so we can give you an honest opinion on suitability. We also provide an Access Statement for each property that you may find helpful.

Whitby

Whitby is a popular seaside town that’s split in two halves, the West and the East side. With it’s cobbled streets and narrow alleyways leading you into hidden yards, The East side is described as the old part of the town. It’s where you will find the 199 Steps leading to Whitby Abbey, the well know Fortune’s smokehouse and shops selling Whitby Jet. It’s a great area for exploring and there are pavements with dropped down kerbs but wheelchair users do find this part of the town far less accessible than the West side.

The West side of the town is generally flat. As well as the amusement arcades you’ll find a number of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants here – many of which are wheelchair accessible. The approach towards the piers offer stunning views and the beaches are all accessible via a slope. The Whitby West Cliff lift operates at certain times of the year for easy access to and from the beach if you’d rather avoid the slope back uphill. There are accessible toilets around the town but we understand the Marina car park toilets are the best equipped. There’s also plenty of disabled parking bays (not exempt from payment) in the town.

If required, you can hire mobility equipment including scooters, beach wheelchairs and even all-terrain wheelchairs from Whitby DAG. They offer a friendly, flexible service and many of our guests comment on how easy it is to hire equipment through them.
