Commonwealth Games, Queen’s Baton Relay comes to Whitby.

The Commonwealth Games are due to start in Birmingham later this month, and the Baton Relay has been moving around the country. Last week on July 13th it was the turn of Whitby.

At 5.40pm the Baton was handed over to RNLI crew member, Andrew Brighton on the shore of Robin Hood’s Bay. Andrew took the Baton on-board the RNLI all-weather lifeboat for a journey along the coast to Whitby.

On landing at the Lifeboat Station, the Baton was then passed over to be carried up Church Street and up the 199 Steps to the Abbey. After the Baton carriers were welcomed at the Abbey to cheers from the crowd, there were songs from the Whitby Community Choir and entertainment.

At 7.10pm, the HM Coastguard Rescue helicopter landed near the Abbey and the Baton was passed on once again for a flight up the coast to start its next stage in Saltburn and Redcar.
