A Budget-Friendly Holiday in Whitby: A Guide to Enjoying the Seaside Without Breaking the Bank

Taking a holiday or even a short break can work out to be quite expensive, wherever you happen to go. That’s why we have come up with some suggestions on how you can enjoy a budget-friendly holiday in Whitby without compromising on experiences.

  1. Plan Your Visit During Off-Peak Seasons

One of the most effective ways to save money on a trip to Whitby is by visiting during the off-peak season. The summer months of July and August are the busiest and most expensive times to visit, with higher prices for accommodation and activities. Instead, consider planning your break in the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is still pleasant, the town is less crowded, and you are also more likely to find one of our popular deals, such as our 5 nights for the price of 3.

  1. Getting Here on a Budget

Traveling to Whitby can be economical if you plan ahead.

  • Train Travel: Book your train tickets in advance to take advantage of lower fares. Whitby is accessible by train from major cities like York and Newcastle, with beautiful scenic routes along the way. Look for deals or use a railcard to get further discounts.
  • Bus Travel: The bus is often a cheaper alternative to the train, with several coach companies offering routes to Whitby. If you’re coming from the Leeds or York area then take a look at the Coastliner service.   At present a single journey on all Transdev buses will remain at just £2, slashing 87 per cent off the fare for a one-way trip on its Coastliner network between Leeds and the North Yorkshire Coast. This option might take longer but significantly less expensive.
  • Car Sharing: If you prefer to drive, consider car sharing with friends or family to split the cost of fuel and parking rather than bringing separate vehicles.

  1. Exploring Whitby on Foot

Whitby is a compact town, and one of the best ways to explore it is on foot. Walking not only saves money on transportation but also allows you to fully immerse yourself in the town’s charm.

  • Whitby Abbey: A visit to the iconic Whitby Abbey is a must. While there is an entry fee, you can take advantage of discounts by purchasing an English Heritage membership if you plan to visit other historical sites. Alternatively, enjoy the spectacular views of the Abbey from the surrounding areas or take the 199 steps up to St. Mary’s Church.
  • Piers and Beaches: Whitby’s piers and beaches are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The West Pier offers great views of the harbour, while Whitby Beach is ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. Don’t miss the chance to search for fossils or explore the rock pools at low tide.
  • Walking Tours: Join a walking tour of Whitby to learn about its history, folklore, and hidden gems. There are various Guided Walking Tours which are relatively inexpensive, or download one of many walking guides in and around Whitby.
  • OpenTop Bus Sightseeing Tour: The Guided Tour will take you on this trip around Whitby – you can hop on and off the sightseeing tour as many times as you like – whilst you enjoy magnificent seascapes and experience Whitby’s narrow winding streets as the open top bus climbs steeply up to the impressive ruins and new visitor facilities of Whitby Abbey. Tickets valid all day (24 hours) Find more info HERE
  1. Eating on a Budget

Whitby is famous for its fish and chips, but dining out can quickly add up. Here are some ways to enjoy local cuisine without overspending:

  • Takeaway Fish and Chips: Opt for takeaway rather than dining in. Many of Whitby’s fish and chip shops offer cheaper prices for takeaway, which you can enjoy at the beach or take them back to eat in the comfort of your holiday cottage or apartment.
  • Self-Catering: Staying in one of our cottages or apartments gives you the option to eat ‘at home’, visit local markets and supermarkets to buy fresh ingredients for your meals. Whitby has a weekly market where you can find affordable local produce. You can also pack up a picnic to enjoy while you are out and about.
  • Budget-Friendly Eateries: Look for cafes and pubs that offer lunch specials or early bird menus. These often provide substantial meals at a lower cost than dinner menus.

  1. Free and Low-Cost Activities

Whitby has plenty of free and low-cost activities that allow you to experience the best of the town without spending much.

  • Whitby Museum and Pannett Park: The Whitby Museum offers insight into the town’s history, and the admission fee is minimal. Pannett Park, which surrounds the museum, is free to enter and offers beautiful gardens and play areas for children.
  • Captain Cook Memorial Museum: This small museum, located in the house where Captain Cook once lived, offers affordable entry and provides a fascinating look into the life of the famous explorer.
  • Whitby’s Walking with Heritage Trail: The trail takes you on a journey around Whitby’s harbour and West Cliff as you discover more about the incredible fishing heritage in the town. Follow the trail to discover nine unique sculptures by local artist Emma Stothard. Each sculpture represents a piece of history in the town’s fishing heritage.   Use the App to help you follow the trail.
  • RNLI Museum: The small museum is housed in a double boathouse which was used by the RNLI between 1895 and 1956. The museum displays models, photographs, mementos from shipwrecks and tells the stories of heroic rescues and dangerous seas. The museum is free of charge but please remember that the RNLI appreciate donations in order to fund the amazing service they offer.
  • Whitby’s Beaches: Enjoy the town’s two beaches; one on the East Side, which is dog friendly, and the larger and longer West Beach. From the west beach, when the tide is out, take a walk along the coast to Sandsend. You could also do some rock-pooling, beachcombing and fossil hunting. You may be surprised at what you can find. Take a look at our Fossil Hunting Guide
  • Take a stroll along the piers: Whitby has 2 piers, one on the East side and one on the West. Take a stroll along the piers, have a look at the lighthouses, gaze out to sea and watch the boats coming and going. Don’t forget to turn round and look back at the town. This is a great spot to take photos!
