Whitby Swing Bridge Closures 2025
Whitby Swing Bridge Closures Announced for 2025 Tourist Season
If you’re planning a stay in one of our Whitby holiday cottages this year, it’s important to be aware of temporary changes to traffic flow around the town’s iconic Whitby Swing Bridge.
For the fifth year running, North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that the Whitby Swing Bridge will be closed to most vehicles during peak tourist periods. The measure, which aims to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety, will apply from 10:30 to 16:00 on weekends during school holidays, Bank Holidays, and special events. Buses will be exempt from the closures to ensure continued public transport access.
The first closures will begin over the Easter school holidays, starting the weekend of 5 – 6 April. Additional closures are scheduled for Whitby’s Goth Weekends on 26 – 27 April and 1 – 2 November —dates that typically see a significant rise in foot traffic near the bridge.
Councillor Phil Trumper, who represents the Whitby West division, emphasised the importance of these pedestrian-friendly changes:
“Pedestrianising the bridge is crucial for improving safety and alleviating overcrowding in the swing bridge area. We hope both residents and visitors understand that the benefits of the closures outweigh the inconvenience they may cause to road users.”
For guests staying in Whitby holiday cottages, especially those located near the harbour or in the town centre, the temporary traffic-free policy offers a more relaxed and safe environment for exploring on foot. Local authorities will install clear signage and monitor traffic patterns to ensure the scheme runs smoothly and supports pedestrian access throughout the year.
Whether you’re crossing the Whitby Swing Bridge to browse the shops or heading toward the Abbey to enjoy the coastal views, the pedestrian-only hours will make it easier—and safer.
