Whitby at Christmas: What is there to see and do?
A Festive Atmosphere
As the Christmas season approaches, Whitby’s streets come alive with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and beautifully decorated shop windows.
Take a leisurely stroll along the harbour or walk along the beach and enjoy the fresh sea air. Explore Whitby’s historic streets and discover charming shops, cozy tea rooms, and traditional pubs. Indulge in a hearty Christmas meal at one of the town’s many restaurants or shop for some of the great local produce and cook in the comfort of your holiday cottage or apartment.
The run-up to Christmas
Festivities commence in mid-November with the Christmas Market & Festival which include the ‘switching on’ of the Christmas lights.
On 6 and 7 December the Panto season kicks off with Snow White at the Whitby Pavilion. A fun show for the whole family, but Tickets do need to be booked in advance.
7 & 8 December sees the annual return of the Krampus Run. Krampus, St Nicholas and their helpers walk the streets of Whitby in their amazing costumes. (This is possibly not suitable for very young children. Please do take a look at their website to find out what it’s all about.
For a quieter, more traditional event on the same days (7 & 8 December), take a short drive to Robin Hood’s Bay for the Victorian Weekend. There you will find locals in Victorian dress, carol singing, a lantern parade, live music, festive food and treats.

Weekends from 30th November until 24 December – Santa Specials on the NYMR. Board a steam train and meet Santa.
14 & 15 December- Made in Whitby Christmas Festival, at Whitby Brewery
14 December – Whitby Artisan Christmas Market at the Coliseum.
21 December – Whitby Christmas Tractor Light Parade.
26 December – Boxing Day Dip.
