The Local Area
Whitby is a lively seaside town with something to offer in every season. The bustling town centre is packed with independent shops, galleries and cafés and is well known for its excellent fish and chips. Cobbled streets lead up to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, famously linked to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with the 199 steps rewarding climbers with panoramic views across the coastline.
The wide sandy beach is ideal for families, with traditional seaside fun including donkey rides, sandcastles and ice creams. Walkers will love the dramatic coastal scenery, with Whitby forming part of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance path stretching across heather-clad moorland and nearby villages. Scenic routes lead to hidden coves and beaches, with the walk to Robin Hood’s Bay particularly popular.
Fishing enthusiasts are well catered for, with sea fishing available from the harbour, beaches or by charter boat, and freshwater fishing on the nearby River Esk at Ruswarp. For a nostalgic day out, the North York Moors Steam Railway runs from Whitby through Grosmont and Goathland to Pickering, offering stunning views across the moors.
With the beach just 550 yards away, shops within 200 yards and pubs and restaurants only 250 yards from the door, Whitby Sail Loft is an excellent base for enjoying everything this much-loved coastal town and its surrounding countryside have to offer.
