What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is said to be a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy. It encompasses fashion, engineering, art and music.
The movement has been influenced by the Victorian era and features technology and inventions as people in the 19th century may have imagined them. The clothing depicts Victorian fashion. ‘Steam-themed’ accessories such as hats, goggles, time pieces, steam-powered weapons and a touch of ‘goth’.
Whitby Steampunk Weekend
Whitby Steampunk weekend is back. With lockdown restrictions being lifted in mid-July, the ever popular Steampunk Weekend will take place 24 – 25 July 2021 at the Whitby Pavilion and around the town.
The long awaited event will offer more than 70 Trade Stands at the Pavilion, various workshops, Music, Cabaret, The Ravens Morris Dancing and the Summertime Stroll which takes place on the Saturday. This is when all the participants parade from the Met Ballroom to the Whalebone Arch on West Cliff giving us the opportunity to take in the creative and magnificent costumes.
Whether you’re taking part yourself or an observer it is worth a visit just to experience the buzz in the town and see some great outfits.
