Winter charm

Publication: Yorkshire Evening Post

Whitby is suddenly hip - as the numerous building projects spewing forth new apartments for the "weekend second home classes" testify.

All this activity is breathing new life into a town that simply reeks of history and character - and bringing with it a distinctly modern feel to its well trodden narrow streets and alleyways.

While, for many, Whitby will never be a full blown holiday destination, it is becoming an increasingly popular stopping off point for a get-away-from-it-all-short-break.  And a wonderful way of enjoying this type of holiday is from the comfort of your own "home from home".

York-based Shoreline Cottages owns a number of cottages in and around Whitby, all of which are simply bursting with old world charm despite their modern touches.  They can accommodate groups from cosy twosomes to full blown family outings.  Our winter break is for four adults - we have left the children behind to recapure at least a brief moment of freedom in the small but perfectly formed Abbey View.  An upstairs window produces a beautiful view of Whitby's magnificent, windswept Abbey, standing on the opposite headland.

Abbey View, which sleeps five people in comfort, sits in a secluded back street away from the noise but within a few seconds walk of the centre of town.  It celebrates its age with wooden floors, stone interior walls and period fittings and furnishings but doesn't neglect those who seek the comfort of modern appliances.  You can't really get more perfect.
