The Whitby Spring Angling Festival Opens The Fishing Season

The Whitby Spring Angling Festival 2014 is taking place between 5 April and 20 April 2014. The event marks the start of the high sea fishing seasonand attracts anglers from all over the UK.

Every year in Whitby, the local charter skippers hold 4 angling festivals which are spread across the fishing season; one in April, one in July, one in September and an Up tiding Festival later in the year (generally in November).

This year, the Whitby Spring Angling Festival will take place between 5 April and 20 April. This event will mark the opening of the high sea fishing season in Whitby and attracts anglers from all over the UK.

The anglers are taken out to sea on board one of the boats of the Whitby Charter Skippers Association and will fight it out for the £1000 awarded to the heaviest catch.

Which fish species can lurk around Whitby’s Waters?

The wide varieties of fish species which populate the waters around Whitby make it a very attractive destination for keen anglers.

However, during the spring months, smaller species such as cod and ling prevail. Despite this, big catches are not uncommon at this time of year with many fish weighing over 30lb and the winning fish sometimes reaching around 45lb.

How to join in the action

Anglers taking part in the Whitby Spring Angling Festival will often group together and charter a boat.

The entry price is set at £40 per boat and the entry price is often split amongst the group of anglers.

However, it is worth bearing in mind that some skippers will take individual bookings if their boats are not fully booked.

Even though most anglers bring their own fishing equipment, some skippers offer the possibility of hiring rods and will provide bait if contacted prior to the event.

If you miss out on the spring festival you can also compete for the biggest catch in summer and autumn as well as during the Up tiding Festivals later in the year.
