Whitby’s Engine Shed To Be Transformed Into Visitor Attraction
Whitby sees yet another historical visitor attraction resurrected and opened to the public as The Engine Sheds sparks back into life.
For some time the 166 year old engine shed has had its future surrounded by uncertainty and confusion, until developer Terry Hodgkinson revealed his ambitions plans to turn this beautiful dwelling into an art gallery and 80 table restaurant to savour and preserve some more of Whitby’s diverse and enthralling history.
The new venue is sure to bring in a great deal of interest and prove to be a popular visitor attraction not only for tourists, but for also locals wishing to view the work of local artists and drop in for some food and a hot drink as well. The Grade II listed building is set to open in March 2014 after being completely renovated by a local building firm.
The 6,000 square foot premises is set to offer a range of art gallery exhibitions on a mezzanine floor area, whilst also accommodating an impressive 80 table café and restaurant. With so much space available, the Engine Shed will become one of North Yorkshire’s largest private galleries, displaying an impressive 12 artist’s work at any one given time, most of which will be by the local budding talent found in Whitby.
Developer Terry Hodgkinson believes that this renovation will offer something Whitby is in desperate need of, as well as supplying around 50 new jobs for the local population. Access will be available from the town’s east railway platform, which has already been agreed with all relevant parties.
