Whitby To Welcome Year Of Horror, Ghosts And Ghouls In 2013
See the New Year in with a fun, spooky weekend - New attractions opening this year, inspired by Whitby’s past.2013 is set to see Whitby’s historical horror roots be brought back to life as Paragon Entertainment (creators of the Jorvik Centre in York) look to erect a million pound horror attraction in the town.
Based upon the Hammer House of Horror – a legendary film studio for those seeking guts, gore and ghouls, the attraction is set to give a huge boost to the already thriving tourist industry within the town, with past figures from the Paragon group showing massive increases in visitor numbers with the addition of an attraction. An existing example of this is the Titanic Belfast experience in Northern Ireland has received over a staggering one million visitors in its first year alone, with continued increases predicted for the New Year.
The Hammer House of Horror film studio has an illustrious history with this quiet seaside town, as it achieved huge success with the vampire classic, Dracula (1958) which was of course written by Bram Stoker during his time in Whitby in 1897.
The heaps of horror don’t stop here though; Whitby is also set to be the location of the filming of a £7 million vampire movie which is due to begin in the spring. The film named Vampire United will centre on a struggling non-league team (Whitby United) which is bough by a vampire entrepreneur with the wish to take them to the premier league.
Director Sean McConville sees Whitby as the perfect location for his latest thriller, rather than the sunny streets of Los Angeles, due to its dark Dracula related past and perfect spooky setting.
With yet another exciting year set to unravel in this attractive seaside town, 2013 is definitely the time to head to the coast to experience the fun, friendly and diverse culture that Whitby offers throughout the year.
