Reserve yourself a peaceful suntrap with Solar Cottage. This historic, three-bedroom mid terrace is set back on Whitby’s East Side, just a stone’s throw from cheerful Church Street.
It’s a superb, Grade II Listed fisherman’s cottage, dating from 1750. We love the recent renovation – it’s contemporary and neutral, and the design has retained all the wonderful quirkiness that many guests look for.
Solar Cottage is set over four floors and is best suited to a family of up to five people. After a day on the cobble lanes or sandy beach, sink into the sofa in the ground-floor lounge. When you want to prepare a snack, wander downstairs to the fantastic kitchen diner. When it’s bedtime, head to the first and second floor rooms; there’s a double room and a single on the middle floor, and a twin attic room, through which you’ll access the family bathroom. Yes - we know this is quirky but that is traditional Whitby fishermans cottages for you!
One of our favourite features of Solar Cottage is the pretty, very peaceful, shared courtyard. Set out the folding table and chairs, pour yourselves a drink and picture the fishermen mending their nets here over 250 years ago.

The Local Area
The phrase ‘hidden gem’ was made for Solar Cottage. Accessible on foot from Whitby’s prime location, Church Street, you’ll be close to some of the best attractions, but in a secluded haven when you just want to escape. There are plenty of Whitby Jet shops and the 199-step hill climb to Whitby Abbey nearby, as well as pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and fresh seafood stops. The best parking is ten minutes’ walk along Church Street.
