The Whitby Fishing Festival Starts This Weekend!
A month of competitive fishing starts on Saturday, with up to £10,000 up for grabs!
While Anglers of all experience levels flock to Whitby’s beautiful coastline all year round, it’s June’s Whitby Fishing Festival that attracts the biggest crowds, and with cash prizes at stake it’s not difficult to see why so many consider this the angling event of the year.
Unlike the causal fishing for crabs and small fish that locals and visitors to Whitby can enjoy around the town harbour, the June fishing festival is certainly a more serious affair. Organised by the Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association, the anglers taking part will be fishing from boats as opposed to the shoreline. Boats taking part have to be registered with Association and the charter skippers meet regularly to organise not only the June event, but 3 others as well that take place throughout the year.
This year’s fishing festival promises not to disappoint, with £10,000 in the prize fund. While the festival consists of several fishing competitions, such as a junior event, it’s the competition to catch the heaviest fish that often draws the most attention. It also draws attention due to the £5000 prize money, this year sponsored by The Fleece pub, who will be serving refreshments throughout the event. Runners up will also have a chance to scoop a cash prize with £1000 going to the angler who gets the second heaviest fish. A whopping 71lb halibut has recently been caught in Whitby, so hopes are high that even bigger fish could be seen during the event.
Plenty to see and do
For those visitors coming to Whitby, to either support their angling partners or to simply enjoy the spectacle and atmosphere, there’s still plenty to do in Whitby aside from fish! Why not take a walk through the cobbled streets of the beautiful old town and enjoy the myriad of shops, cafes and restaurants. There’s the historic Abbey for those that don’t mind the long climb up the famous winding steps, with a rewarding view to be found at the top, and for dinner why not enjoy one of Whitby’s fish and chip shops, serving up locally caught fish of course!
